My Discovery Tasks

In health we have to pick a topic to research on. The topic I chose was OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). My success criteria was legend consisting of 1 green question, 2 yellow question and 2 red questions.

Once I had my 5 big questions chosen and the basic key concepts of them I explained the answer further. I explained in more detail how OCD affects people lives and how it works. After that I worked on strategies to over come some of the affects of OCD. I learnt these stratiegies and there usefulness to others.

I worked well by myself but next the I want to work faster and produce better work. The thing I am most proud and produced well was my create work. For this I did art, it shows a girl struggling with OCD.

Heart Dissection

Heart Dissection

What are we learning about?

In science we are learning about the heart and the circulatory system.

Why are we dissecting heart?

We dissected a heart to look at the insides of the heart.

What are the parts of the heart? Did you see them?

When dissecting the heart we saw the valve, vertical, part of the arteries, and the septum.

Did you enjoy the dissection? Why/why not?

At the start I did enjoy the dissection because I like cutting the heart. By the end the dissection it was less enjoyable because of the smell and the blood that was on my gloves.

Coraline - Lighting and Colour

In Coraline there are drastic lighting and colour differences between the real world and the other world. When we first see the real world it’s grey and dull. It is presented as this boring place that Coraline lives in. When we are introduced to the other world it is bright, warm and welcoming. This place is vibrant, full of colour, and is presented as the fun place. Then  by the end of the film and bright warm colours of the other turn into blinding purple and greens. The colour palette changes while still keeping the bright colours of the other world, it’s still darker as the other world is falling apart. At the end of the film we are back in the real world. Instead of it being grey and dull, it’s brighter while still keeping the muted colour palette.

Coraline - SEXXXY

In the scene where the tunnel to the other world is introduced, we get this sense of fantasy and mystery. This effectively shows the theme of looks can be deceiving. As the tunnel to the other is used to entice Coraline's curiosity.

For example the real world where Coraline’s from is dull, grey and boring. This is Coraline's first ‘introduction’ to the other world as it is not some boring thing from her world. We also see this when she sees the other mother for the first time, she is shown with warm and welcoming colours. Having a hard contrast to her real mother.

This shows that the other world was made to excite Coraline. This makes the audience think of the other world as this mystical, magical thing. The audience feels the sense of caution but also curiosity as to what this tunnel leads to. At the end of the film we understand that the tunnel was an illusion that looks can be deceiving.

The director did this to make the other world appear as this wonderful place. The purpose of this is to contribute to the theme of looks and can be deceiving. This was done to show that even if some appears as this mystical, magical thing it can be dangerous.

Coinciding with the theme of looks can be deceiving this tunnel to the other showed this. This worked well with the theme because the entrance to the other world deceived Coraline with its bright and mystical colours. Combined with the other world in general the whole world was made to deceive its prey. So when Coraline recognises the other for it is the tunnel changes. Meaning that the illusion is gone and it’s not deceiving Coraline anymore.

Why did Wybie through the hand into the well when he didn’t know what it was?

In this scene a close up shot is used. This is used to frame the other mother with this sense of power. This is used effectively because of the other mother's demanding pose and demeanor.

For example later the other mother is framed to have power over Coraline looking down at her.

This makes the audience feel the other mothers' power over Coraline.

The director did this to show that the illusion of the other world is falling apart.

This worked well with looks and can be deceiving because now the other mother doesn’t car and is dropping the illusion of being Coraline's perfect mother.

In this scene Coraline is crawling back into the tunnel that first brought her to the other world.

This effectively shows the illusion of the other world has dropped.

This is demonstrated in the way the tunnel is lighted. It no longer has those bright colours and doesn’t interest Coraline's curiosity.

The director did this to show the change on how Coraline views the other world, and how the illusion of the other world has dropped.

Another example is when the bright welcoming colours of the other fade show what the real other is.

In this scene a wide shot is used to show the pink palace.

This shows that after everything the pink palace is still standing.

For example at the start of the film the pink palace was shown in the rain. And was dark and dingy.

The director did this to show the aftermath of everything Coraline went through. And that she has changed her view of the pink palace.

Coinciding the theme of looks can be deceiving the pink palace first appeared to Coraline as this horrible place that she hates. But now after everything she is grateful and sees the pink palace as her home.

Bones (Hands)

Bones (Hands)
In science we have been looking and bones in the human body. This week we were looking at the hand and the things it is made out of: bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles.

The straws on the hand represent the bones that make up the hand. The string going through the strings represent the tendons. Three straws on each finger except the thumb to represent the bones in the fingers.

Bones:The bones in our body gives up structure without them our bodies would have no support.
Joints: Joints are where two bones meet. They make the skeleton flexible without them, movement would be impossible.
Tendons: Tendons connect muscles to bones, allowing us to move.
Ligament: Ligaments help to hold things in place.
Muscles: Muscles function to produce force and motion.

Camera Techniques

Camera Techniques:

Close up:
This camera shot is used often in film. This technique is used for many reasons. It can be used to add emotion to a scene, so the actor can really connect with the audience. It is not only used on people but on objects too.

Medium Close Up:
This technique much like close up camera shots is used for the audience to still connect and see the emotions of the character while also showing their torso and the background.

Mid shot:
In a movie a medium shot, mid shot, or waist shot is a camera angle shot from a medium distance. It is used in many different ways and scenes like dialogue ect.

Long + Wide:
Long + Wide shot is used to show the entire object or person and their relation to the background and this around them. This technique is less used in film.

Extreme Long Shot:
This technique is used as an establishing shot for scene setting. It is usually used to show an exterior shot of a scene or thrilling action.

Low angle:
\
Low angles are used to create a sense of strength and power for the actor/s in the shot. It is one of the lesser used techniques.

High Angle:
This camera angle like the low angles is used to create mood. The high angle is used to look down on the character to create a sense of vulnerability or powerlessness.

Eye Level:
This is a common technique shot at the characters eye level. The camera does not need to show the audience the actor's eyes nor does the actor have to look into the camera for it to be shot as an eye level shot.

Panorama:
Panorama is a wide shot that is used for filming landscapes ect. It is a rarer used camera shot.
Tilt:
This is a shot where the camera is tilted. It is a well used technique in film.

Overhead:
Overhead is very similar to the high angle shot. It is shot where you film from the person or object above the head.

Tacking:

This is a technique where that camera tracks the character/s. It is useful for running and walking shots ect.

Photography - Rule of thirds

In Art we have been learning about rule of thirds. How a image is divided into a three by three grid. With the focal point of the photo being where the lines of the grid intersect.

These are sketches I drew when practising how to do rule of thirds.

This is my redraw of a photo using rule of thirds. Each focal point of the image is where the lines of the grid intersect.

Visual Arts - Photo Montage

Visual Arts - Photo Montage

This term in Visual Arts we are looking at photo montage. I have made my own photo montage

Reflection: I think overall I did a decent job with my photo montage. But I think I could of done better. Because photo montages usually combined other things together to make an overall image. While I just put images of the same thing on top of something else.

Question: How do you think I could improve this photo montage.

Algebra in Science

Algebra in Science

Summary: In this Hurumanu, we have been learning how to solve algebra and geometry. Angles, tessellations, rotation, reflection ect. This has helped us understand geometer better.

Reflection: What I like about this Hurumanu is that the teacher made it easy to understand what to do. Also when we did not understand he help us and encouraged us to get better.

Here is our slideshow showcasing our learning in algebra:

We showcased our learning of algebra with using the formula of speed. V=d/t (Velocity = Distance/Time). We flew paper planes and divided the distance they travel by the speed they travel. Some that it equals how many meters per second the plane could travel.

Lemon Power

Lemon Power:

Voltage: The energy that electrons get from a power supply.

Current: The movement of electrons.

Aim: To create voltage out of a lemon.

Method:

  • Roll the lemon out so the inside is liquidy.
  • Stick a piece of zinc and copper into the lemon.
  • Connect the lemon up to a voltmeter.
Results:
One lemon: 1 voltage

Two lemons: 2 volts

All of the lemons: 2.3 volts

Discussion: When we rolled the lemon we made the inside liquidy. Because we rolled the lemon we freed the acidicly charged particles. The acidicly charged particles moved around creating a current. More lemons more acidicly charged particle meaning more voltage.

Conclusion: This experiment worked showing how a lemon can create voltage. Next time I would try to make sure the lemon doesn't leak so much.

Kiwi Bakers - Savouries

Kiwi Bakers - Savouries

This week in cooking we had the choice to make either a sweet pastry item or a savoury pastry item. For the sweet pastry it was apple turnovers and for savoury pastry we made egg scrolls.

Ingredients:
Puff pastry
Egg
milk
other items of your choice (ham, cheese, ect.)

We first collected the ingredients needed and others that we wanted. After whisking the egg and milk together we were allowed to cut the puff pastry out to put into the tray. We somehow had enough puff pastry to cut out 12 scrolls. We then filled the scrolls with egg, cheese, ham and corn. Then we put it into the oven for about 15 minutes. They were very delicious when they were finished.
